A Chess Set For Dad on Father's Day
A lot of us have a hard time figuring out what to get our fathers for Fathers' Day. What do you get the man who has everything? Fathers know best, they've been there for us through thick and thin, our entire lives. We need to show him that we are thinking about him, and that we care enough to put some thought into a gift for him.
What about a nice chess set for fathers' day? Chess is a game of cunning and skill, and is made up of sixteen pieces for each player. On each side of the board, you will find the ever important king, one queen, two rooks, two knights, two bishops, and of course two pawns. The object of the game is to move your pieces strategically around the board in such a manner that in the end, your king is in attack position, and can not be forced out of that position. Thereby declaring a check mate, and ending the game. Some games can take only minutes to play, while others can take days, weeks, and even sometimes months. There are sometimes players who will play through the mail, sending their movements via letters, and a game can go on for years.
You have many options when it comes to what type of board you would like. The most common material for the board is wood. However, you can also find the boards made of glass, ivory, and marble. Equally as diverse in materials used to make the boards, are the chess pieces themselves. The chess pieces are available in glass, ivory, bone, marble, and of course wood. These chess pieces can be found in an immeasurable number of themes and characters. Star wars, Star Trek, dragons, wizards, dogs, and cats, if you can imagine it, you can most likely also find it in a chess game.
Millions of people all over the world, from all walks of life, play chess. It is a game that knows no boundaries, everyone can play, but of course some are better skilled at it than others. Some would even say that the game of chess can mimic life, in that you need the skills to survive, and make it though the day to day stressors of life, without being pushed off of your position.
Show dad that you appreciate all the lessons he taught you in life, with a new beautiful chess set, and hopefully even sit down with him, spend some time with him, and maybe even let him win a game or two, after all, it is his day.

Why do make Staunton out to ?
If Staunton avoided playing Paul Morphy how could we immortalize his pieces by using it as our "standard" set in tournaments? Too bad Morphy didn't have a set of his own we could use as the standard for tournaments.
Hello --
Howard Staunton deserves some recognition, after all he was a great player in his own right! He published the first chess periodical. He arranged tournaments (including some of the first international tournaments). His chess book was very well received.
It is not so much that he designed the set ... he didn't (there have been some claims that the designer of the chess set bearing his name was a freemason).
Also Morphy refused to play Staunton once too (went to Europe to play). So it can be said that he also dodged a match.
I think that accepting the Staunton Set as standard was the right thing to do -- it gave chess a theme that is now recognized all over the world.
As an aside did you know that some Muslims refuse to play on a set with all the Christain symbols?
Gens Un Sum,
Bill
