Themed Chess Sets - The Renaissance Period
The term Renaissance is a French word that means 'rebirth'. The Renaissance Period was a time that spanned the 13th through to the 17th century where there was a 'rebirth' in culture and the ways of thinking. Rather than religion being the sole source of knowledge, now philosophy, science, politics and the arts would have a marked impact on how people perceived their world. This new school of cultural sprouted in Florence Italy and spread throughout Europe. It was a time when there was a huge shift in thinking and a Modern world was emerging.
The Renaissance Period marked many milestones that make up very important and significant milestones in history. Gutenberg perfected the printing process. Can you imagine a world today with no newspapers, flyers or magazines? Christopher Columbus discovered America, now if that hadn't happened we'd all be crammed into various places in Europe still. Copernicus made the scientific discovery that the earth revolved around the sun. Michelangelo was painting the Sistine Chapel and William Shakespeare was writing plays that would be performed all over the world into the current century. Music was breaking out of the Churches and now a popular secular music with instruments and dancing was emerging. These are just a few samples of all that was happening during the middle ages.
In the world of Art, there was move to a highly realistic linear perspective. They were able to create images that were highly realistic and studied lights and shadows to enhance their techniques. The beautifully crafted pieces of the Renaissance themed chess set reflect the detail in the art of this time period. Using rich metals and imagery from this golden era the pieces will come to life as works of art on display in any home. Perhaps you could encounter a rebirth in strategy in your chess game. Your skills could evolve with practice and using some new thinking, whether scientific or philosophical as well!

What kind of college does my son have a shot at with a 1410 SAT (reading/math)?
He has about a 3.7 weighted GPA (3.3 regular) with no extracurriculars to speak of (book club, renaissance club, chess club, veterinary internship, work as a bus boy)?
He scored a 1410, which means he averaged 700 in both reading and math- that is an excellent score. His 3.7 GPA is also very good, especially if he's been taking mostly AP and honors courses. His extracurriculars are just fine; having a job is never a bad thing, and I think colleges will be impressed by the internship.
If he wants to beef things up on the extracurriculars front (not strictly necessary, but it couldn't hurt) he might try becoming an officer in one of his clubs-leadership experience is great for college apps and for life in general. Or he could join a new club- community service looks great for colleges.
Overall, your son has an extremely strong application so far. He'd probably be a competitive candidate, if not a shoo-in, for most state schools, and might be a solid contender at some of the more competitive colleges as well.
If you want to see how he measures up, you can go to collegeboard.com and compare his grades and SATs to the admissions stats for colleges he's interested in.
I hope this helps!
Good luck to you and your son!
