1. d4 f5 2. e4 fxe4 ( Staunton's gambit) 3. Nc3 Nf6 4. Nd5
Leaves white knight into a hanging position, tempting blacks knight to take it. But..
4. ... Nxd5 5. Qh5+ g6 ( black must defend his king by moving g-pawn up) 6. Qxd5 ( threatening black's centre and also Qe5 threatens white's vulnerable rook)
4...c6 is best IMO much better than 4...Nxd5?
If 5. Nxf6+ then perhaps best is
5... exf6
6. f3 d5
7. fxe4 dxf4
If 5. Ne3 then perhaps best is
5... d5
6. Bd2 e6
7. c4 Be7
5. Nb4 is obviously a mistake after
5 ... a5
If 5. Nc3* then perhaps best is
5... e6
6. f3 Bb4
7. fxe4 O-O
* This retreat is probably the best response for white IMO making 4...c6 a clear refutation to 4. Nd5
In any event, no matter how White responds to 4...c6 Black has a good game and the wisdom of 4.Nd5 is dubious! Much better for White is 4. Bg5 and there's a reason it's the book line.
