10 Places to Visit in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland
Ever fancied seeing what the Highlands and Islands of Scotland has to offer? Here are 10 places that are definitely worth a visit.
1. Barra - This predominantly Gaelic-speaking island in the Outer Hebrides has a Toffee Factory, fish factory and the Isle of Barra Distillery to offer. However, most visitors arrive for the Fèis Bharraigh & BarraFest in July.
2. Benbecula - Another fascinating Outer Hebrides island here, with a population of just 1,249 people. After a drawn-out campaign, those residents took control of the island in 2006 in a community buy-out.
3. Campbeltown - A former royal burgh in Argyll and Bute, this town is a vital centre for shipbuilding and Scotch whiskey. However, as a busy fishing port and the home of the Mull of Kintre Music Festival, there is much to bring you to here.
4. Dundee - Home of the Dandy and the Beano, Dundee is the 4th largest city in Scotland and welcomes many visitors every year. While its comic routes are a big draw, many people flock here to see the famous ship Discovery and the Unicorn.
5. Inverness - This Northern Scotland city is regarded as the capital of the Highlands and is situated near the site of the 18th century Battle of Culloden. It is a fast-growing city, having seen its population rise by 107 from 1991-2001 and from 1997-2007.
6. Islay - The Queen of the Hebrides is Scotland's fifth largest island and lies just 25 miles north of the Irish coast. Every year it attracts many tourists thanks to is wide array of bird species and whisky distilleries.
7. Kirkwall - The capital of Orkney can be found off the coast of northern mainland Scotland. It is blessed with fantastic historic buildings and is home to a major annual festival called the Ba Game. Held each Christmas and New Years, between the Uppies and the Dooners, a traditional form of football that is an experience you'll never forget.
8. Stornoway - For an altogether more peaceful experience, this burgh on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides is famous for its harbour and maritime industry. However, each year a four-day community-led festival known as the Hebridean Celtic Festival attracts more than 10,000 visitors.
9. Shetland Island - Scotland's third largest island is located to the north east of Orkney and just 170 miles from the Faroe Islands. With a fascinating history, rich wildlife and beautiful scenery it remains a very popular destination.
10. Tiree - With a population of just 800, the island of Tiree in the Inneer Hebrides is a popular windsurfing destination and was the venue for the Cornona Extra PWA World Cup Finals in 2007.
So, if you're looking for a break with a difference, why consider a visit to Scotland's Highlands and Islands? With all of these destinations well linked by air travel, it couldn't be easier. All you'd need to do then is find accommodation, whether you need Barra hotels or hotels in Benbecula.
