Choose the Perfect Chess Board for You
For those of us that play chess when we are required to purchase a new or even spare chess board it is very important to take the time to select the right board and the right pieces to match the chess board of course. There are many different places to buy a chess board but choosing the right one is always difficult as it is something that you will cherish and use for a long period of time. This should not be a decision taken lightly especially if you are a regular player because you will be using the board frequently and choosing a board that has a great style can only add more pleasure to the game of chess itself, both to you and to your opponent. If you are searching for a chess board purely for its decorative or display attributes rather than for functionality for game play then there are a multitude of options available as well as a huge range of chess pieces. You will find there are all forms of novelty and unique pieces available that will suit almost every kind of chess board. Therefore the decision as to whether you plan to use the chess board or whether you just want a chess board for decoration needs to be decided from the outset. Chess boardscome in all types of materials, wood such as elm and maple are very common choices. You can also find chess boards made from alternative materials such as plastic, glass and marble however you want to pick a board that best suits your needs and your style. The prices will vary depending on the size of the chess board as well as the materials so the consideration of what material you would like is a big factor in the relation to cost. Once you have made your decision regarding the material within this general quality and price range that you will begin your search. When purchasing a board you also need to consider whether the chess pieces you currently have will fit the new chess board that you buy. The size of your existing chess pieces and the impact the pieces will have on your new chess board need to be considered, for actual game play and for the way the two will look when set up. The size of your new board is generally just related to your preference unless you are planning to use the board for tournaments and in that case you need to be looking for exact sizes of board and pieces. You do of course want to choose a board of the best quality that you can afford as the chess board should last you a great deal of time and you want to be happy with your final decision when making your purchase. In many cases a chess board and pieces can be passed down through a family so keep this in mind when making your selection. You want a chess board that is sturdy and will be long lasting as well as appealing to the eye. If you are planning to use the chess board on a fairly regular basis then you need to ensure you spend the time to find a board that is long lasting. There are of course other options for chess boards such as folding sets and travel sets and if you are looking for something that may be more portable then perhaps one of these options may be a better choice selection. There are various designs available in the folding or travel sets as well and of course varying price ranges to match. Some of these sets are made from very functional materials and are very versatile for taking away on holiday with you so you can play anywhere. Whatever the chess board it is you are looking for, there are many options for finding the board that suits you best all that is required is your initial plan as to the main reason you will purchase the new board and then your research into finding the chess board that suits you best. It is not as difficult a task as you might think, in fact there may be too many options available to you and that may be your most difficult task, finding the chess board that suits you.

Can you suggest some good chess-themed fiction?
I'm looking for some good books where chess plays a major part in the story. Some I've read already are:
"Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass" by Lewis Carroll, Alice goes through the looking glass and becomes a pawn in a chess game,
"The Eight" by Katherine Neville, where the characters are sent on an Indiana Jones-style hunt for a lost jeweled chess set,
and
"The Flanders Panel" by Arturo Perez-Reverte, a murder mystery where the characters are researching a famous painting of a chess game.
Can you suggest any others?
Time's Eye
by Arthur C. Clarke, Stephen Baxter
Time's Eye, the first book in Arthur C. Clarke and Stephen Baxter's Time Odyssey duology -- a companion series of sorts to Clarke's seminal Space Odyssey saga (2001: A Space Odyssey, 2010: Odyssey Two, et al.) -- is set on an Earth that has been inexplicably rearranged into a patchwork of different historical time periods. In the blink of an eye, the planet and every living thing on it no longer exist on a single timeline: United Nations peacekeepers from the year 2037 inhabit the same continent as Genghis Khan's Mongol horde, Neanderthals, and sabre-tooth tigers!
As refugees stream toward Babylon, a military chess match like the Earth has never seen ensues -- Genghis Khan versus Alexander the Great...
Grandmaster (Otto Penzler Presents Series)
by Warren Murphy, Molly Cochran
Brooks Hansen, The Chess Garden.
A doctor serving in the concentration camps in South Africa during the Boer War sends his wife twelve letters with chess pieces.
Paolo Maurensig, The Luneberg Variation.
The death of a man in a chessboard-shaped maze is linked to chess games played between a concentration camp inmate and commandant.
Stephen Carter, The Emperor of Ocean Park.
A judge who was rejected for the Supreme Court because of his connection to a suspected criminal dies and leaves a mysterious note and a chess piece for his law professor son.
The Royal Game & Other Stories by Stefan Zweig
Alekhine's Anguish: A Novel of the Chess World by Charles D. Yaffe
The Kings Are Already Here by Garret Freymann-Weyr
When Phebe, 15, begins to question her single-minded pursuit of becoming a ballerina, she decides to visit her father in Switzerland. Instead of being a trip to refocus her energy on dance, it evolves into a journey to define herself and her goals. In Geneva, she meets Nikolai Kotalev, an equally dedicated and determined teen whose passion is chess. Her father and his girlfriend have taken the young man under their protective wing and are encouraging his desire to be grandmaster. However, in Nikolai's mind, the only way for him to improve is to be taught by the legendary grandmaster, Stas Vlajnik. Thus the four begin a trek across Europe to various exhibitions and tournaments to find the elusive Vlajnik. This is a beautifully written book about two young people who, until now, have never questioned their chosen careers. More than just a physical journey, the story also follows the spiritual odyssey that both characters undertake. It allows Phebe to grow and change, and it cements Nikolai's devotion to chess. The book also emphasizes the price one must pay for such obsessions.
