what chess set glass or wood?
im looking to get a chess set but i dont know if i should get a glass one or wood one, which one is better? and im getting it so i can LEARN how to play please help
Alright! Whoa there peoples!
I've gotta stop it all right now and fix these hideous answers!
Okay, I own a glass chess set, and, it will *not* break. I've had pieces fall off of very high tables (ie, my cat jumped up on the table once while I was playing chess with a buddy, and knocked over several pieces onto our hard, un-carpeted floor, ... no damage)
So, let's get this "Breaking" thing out of our heads, peeps.
Alright, now, Mr Quix I believe it was, had a very fantastic answer, but due to his autism, it's hard to understand his point...
My biggest problem with the glass set is that ... instead of normal sets where there's black and white, two easily distinguishable colours in even the utmost corners of one's peripheral vision, there are only "clear" and "cloud" colours.
Doesn't sound like much of a problem until you get realistic for five seconds and think about how often in chess, even with black and white colors, there's always the complaint, "Whoops, didn't see that rook there..." and ... they lose their queen.
Now, newbies are all of the time not looking for pieces that might cause harm, but with the closeness both the colours, it's just MUCH easier to mistake your pieces for your opponent's pieces if you aren't looking very hard.
To slash out another comment here, glass chess sets are *not* expensive. I swear, there's one in my local dollar general for $5.99.
The colors of glass pieces will give you a headache too.
I've had this glass chess set for 5 and a half years. Wanna take a guess at how many times I've played on it? ... A lot.
Just, stick with wood, bud. Glass sounds fancier, but theres just so many reasons you shouldn't make that your first chess set! I honestly would advise plastic in normal situations, like the fancy tournament plastic, but wood is fine.
As the only person answering this question who actually has played with a glass set even once in the past year, I think you'd do well to heed my advice.
To recap, glass wont break, won't cost much, but you still don't want it...
John
