What are good books about king Arthur and merlin?
I'm 14 and i ve seen a 1998 tv merlin series and the new one on channel 10 and i'm really liking it and i'm into those fantasy books like isobel carmody's series harry potter and twilight . what are some good books from king arthur and merlin?
I don't know what kinds of books you like to read. I am an old science fiction fan from the word go --I spoke to Marion Zimmer Bradley a few times before the Mists of Avalon came out, and I've read most of those things -- but when I was about your age the book that really got me started on King Arthur is one of the few books of Victorian Poetry I ever loved -- Alfred Lord Tennyson's Idylls of the King. After that I discovered Robert Graves's translation of Malory's La Morte D'Arthur and by the time Mary Stewart and Marion Zimmer Bradley turned their typewriters to the legend I was already hopelessly hooked on the subject.
Tennyson is Tennyson. You may like it or not. Malory was written in Medieval English while Chretian des Troyes and Wolfram von Eschenbach were writing in older forms of French and German. That provides one KEWL opportunity. Look around for the translation you most want to read of ANY of these guys. There are LOTS of them (Graves edited someone else's translation of Morte D'Arthur -- but since he's better known...). You will find boring versions of most old tales. Dump them before you finish THAT PAGE, look around and you will find versions as exciting as the newer writers -- or what you see on TV.
Also pick up Loreena McKinnott's -- was it 1994? -- CD the Visit. It has among other things a setting of Tennyson's Lady of Shallot and lots of other music which is not directly arthurian but does provide a context for the piece I mentioned and other Arthurian things.
